It's best not to preoccupy yourself with what others are doing (though maybe you could benefit from opening up your perspective to see the value in a wider ranger of art).

Alec Longstreth really drove home the idea that so long as you are making art, so long as you make comics, you're a cartoonist. I'm glad there are lots of them out there because cartoonists are wonderful people.

And thanks again and I'm glad you're posting on G+ now! Especially with Google Reader going away, I'm glad I'll be able to easily keep up with your work.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04794144030135326050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5744805511755652905.post-77598024975358518592013-03-21T11:16:13.088-04:002013-03-21T11:16:13.088-04:00Well put! Plus, how many of us cartoonists and artists need day jobs to get by? So where would you draw the line between a professional and a hobbyist? Is someone a professional if they went to school for their medium? Introduces themselves as a cartoonist/artist first when they meet new people? Makes the majority of their income from comics/art?

When I was at CCS last summer, one of the other students asked the teacher when he felt like a "real" cartoonist and he said when he'd had his first cartoon in the New Yorker. And that had been like a month before, and he had already published several graphic novels and taught comics at some prestigious schools and won some big awards. So you're right, it's really arbitrary.

PS City of Cards continues to be awesome! beccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15041299750312350622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5744805511755652905.post-61477518685593838472013-02-17T17:18:30.640-05:002013-02-17T17:18:30.640-05:00Good luck with that! For my mini and convention stuff, I'm doing most of the work myself, but eventually I want to do trade-sized collections of my chapters and that's going to be A LOT of work. I'm planning to go to CAKE in June in Chicago and I'm hoping to go to SPX in Baltimore in September. I'm hoping to fit some teaching time in between during that.

Seattle is a bit of a trek for me (I'm in LA), but I went to college there and have a lot of friends in the area so it's worth the trip. However, my comic artist Carl is in Seattle, so if I ever come and visit him, we'll definitely do a con run, the two of us.

Your friend has some wonderful prints -- I like her style, it's very delicate.

My comic's going to go on hiatus in the summer as I look into some local print shops, see what their rates are. I brush-ink the pages all the time, I wouldn't be learning much (though I would probably save hours!) if I did the inks for the assignment the same way I always do. I've just moved the Ashayta thumbnail/roughs to digital, after seeing the value in being able to move stuff around without redrawing it a million times, thanks to the course.tulokynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16265058893041326963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5744805511755652905.post-43873055115719485222012-12-06T16:06:21.458-05:002012-12-06T16:06:21.458-05:00Though I also just got a nice critique this mornin...Though I also just got a nice critique this morning and that actually makes me feel a lot better.
